Winter Vehicle Prep

Most winter breakdowns in Winnipeg are weak parts that were fine at +5°C. A winter prep visit at Garage 46 finds them in October, when the appointment is easy to get and the fix is cheaper than a tow.

Serving North Kildonan, East Kildonan, Transcona, East St. Paul and the rest of Winnipeg.

What the winter prep covers

Battery load test and charging system check. Block heater current test and a look at the cord and plug. Coolant level, condition and freeze protection. Tire condition and tread depth, and a winter tire changeover if you bring the set. Brake inspection. Wiper blades and −40°C washer fluid. Lights. Belts, hoses and a look underneath for leaks and worn suspension before the potholes hide under snow. You get a written list of what passed, what is marginal and what to fix.

Combine it with your winter tire changeover

The car is already on the hoist for the swap, so most of the inspection adds little time. Book the changeover and ask for the winter prep together, and tell us whether your winter tires are on their own wheels.

Why October, not the first snowfall

The first forecast of snow fills every shop calendar in Winnipeg within days, and the first −30°C morning is when every weak battery and dead block heater announces itself at once. Booking in October means a convenient time and a car that is ready before it has to be.

For performance and summer cars

If the car is going into storage instead, we do storage prep: oil change, fuel stabiliser, battery maintainer setup, tire pressures and rodent protection. Lowered daily drivers can be raised to a winter height and aligned.

Before you book

Winter Vehicle Prep questions.

When should I book winter prep in Winnipeg?

Early to mid October. Winter tires go on once daytime highs sit around 7°C, and the shop calendar fills the week of the first snowfall.

Do I need winter prep if the car is new?

A new car still needs winter tires, −40°C washer fluid and a working block heater if it came without one. The battery and coolant are unlikely to be a problem in year one.

Can you store my summer car?

Ask when you book. We do storage prep; availability of storage space changes through the season.
