Washer Fluid Freezing in the Lines? Winter Washer Fluid and Wipers for Winnipeg

By the Garage 46 team · · 4 min read

The short answer

Washer fluid freezes when summer fluid is still in the lines or when a product rated to −20°C meets a Winnipeg −35°C night. Use fluid rated to −40°C or colder, run it through until the old fluid is gone, and never pour hot water on frozen lines. Winter wiper blades with a rubber boot stop ice building on the frame.

Why it freezes even with winter fluid

The jug may say winter, but there are different grades. Some are rated to −20°C or −30°C, which is fine in Vancouver and useless on a Winnipeg January night. The other common cause is leftover summer fluid sitting in the pump, lines and nozzles. You topped up with the good stuff, but the first few squirts are still the old blend, and that is what freezes at the nozzle.

How to clear frozen lines

  1. Park somewhere above freezing if you can, a heated garage or even a car wash bay, and let it thaw. This is the safe option.
  2. Do not pour hot water on the nozzles or hood. It cracks paint, refreezes instantly and can crack the reservoir.
  3. Do not keep holding the washer switch. A pump pushing against ice can burn out.
  4. Once thawed, drain or run the reservoir down and fill with −40°C fluid, then run the washers until you are sure it has reached the nozzles.

If the fluid never comes out even when warm, the pump, a hose or a nozzle may have split when it froze. That is a quick fix at a shop.

Choosing winter washer fluid

For Winnipeg, look for −40°C or −45°C on the label and treat anything less as a fall product. De-icer blends help with light frost but are no substitute for a scraper. Keep a spare jug in the trunk from November to March; salt spray on Lagimodiere or the Perimeter can empty a reservoir in a single drive.

Wiper blades that survive −30°C

Conventional blades have an exposed metal frame that packs with ice and stops flexing, so the blade skips and smears. Winter blades wrap the frame in a rubber boot, and beam blades have no frame to ice up. Either is a big improvement. Replace blades every fall regardless; a torn or hardened blade cannot be saved. Lift the blades off the glass when you park during freezing rain, and never run the wipers to break them free from the windshield.
