Battery & Electrical Service

A Winnipeg winter finds every weak battery and bad connection. Garage 46 tests the battery, charging and starting system together, so you replace what has failed and nothing else.

Serving North Kildonan, East Kildonan, Transcona, East St. Paul and the rest of Winnipeg.

Battery testing before the cold does it for you

A battery loses roughly half its cranking power at −18°C while the engine needs more to turn over, so a battery that managed in October fails on the first −30°C morning. A load or conductance test takes minutes and shows how much is really left. We test every fall on request and during winter prep visits, and tell you whether to replace now or get another season out of it.

Replacement with the right battery

The correct group size, terminal layout and cold cranking amps for your vehicle matter more than the brand. Many newer cars also need the new battery registered with the body control module so the charging system treats it correctly. We fit the right battery, register it where required, and check the terminals, cables and hold-down while we are there.

Alternator, starter and parasitic drains

A dead battery is sometimes a symptom. A weak alternator never fully recharges it, a worn starter draws more than it should, and a module that stays awake overnight drains it while the car sits. We measure charging voltage, starter draw and parasitic drain rather than replacing the battery and hoping.

Electrical diagnostics

Intermittent warning lights, lights that flicker, power windows and accessories that work sometimes, and wiring chewed by mice over winter storage: electrical faults need a methodical approach with wiring diagrams and a scan tool, not a parts cannon. We trace the fault, confirm it and quote the repair.

Before you book

Battery & Electrical Service questions.

How long does a car battery last in Winnipeg?

Typically three to five years, less with lots of short trips or a car that sits outside at −30°C. Test it every fall once it passes three years.

My car needed a boost once. Do I need a new battery?

Not always, but a battery that dropped low enough to need a boost in the cold is usually near the end. A test tells you, and we also check why it went flat.

Can you check my block heater at the same time?

Yes. Ask when you book and we will test the heater and inspect the cord and plug while the car is in.
