The short answer
A hard pothole hit in Winnipeg most often knocks the alignment out, and can bulge a tire, bend a wheel or damage a strut, tie rod or control arm. Check the tire immediately, photograph the pothole and the damage, report it to 311, and have the car inspected if it pulls, vibrates or the steering wheel sits off-centre. MPI will open a claim, but it is treated like a single-vehicle collision; a City claim through 311 is possible but not guaranteed.
What to do in the first hour
Pull over safely and check the tire for a bulge or pressure loss. Photograph the pothole with scale, its location and the damage. Note the date, time, speed and conditions. Report it to 311. Then drive gently and book an inspection if anything feels different.
The signs of damage
Pulling, a steering wheel that sits off-centre, a new vibration, clunks over bumps, a sidewall bulge, uneven tire wear. Which symptom points to alignment, which to tires and which to suspension.
Claims: MPI, the City, or neither
MPI opens pothole claims but reviews them like single-vehicle collisions, so the deductible applies and your record can be affected. The City accepts claims through 311 with documentation, but payment is not guaranteed. For an alignment alone, neither is usually worth it. Know before you file.
Alignment: the most common repair
Why no shop can quote one number, what changes the price, and how to tell if you need one at all. Winnipeg cars need alignments more often because potholes, frost heaves and salt-seized adjusters are a local specialty.
Spring: when everything shows up
The thaw opens potholes faster than they are filled and reveals what winter did. A spring checklist that catches alignment, suspension, brake and rust problems before they turn into bigger ones.
Lowered and modified cars
Less clearance means a front lip, oil pan and coilovers meet potholes first. How to run a lowered car on Winnipeg roads without feeding it to them.
