Why “just recharge it” rarely works
Air conditioning is a sealed system. If it is low on refrigerant, it leaked, and refrigerant added without finding the leak escapes the same way. We measure system pressures, check the compressor engages, and use dye or an electronic detector to find the leak. Then we quote the repair and the recharge together.
Common Manitoba AC failures
Condensers at the front of the car get hit by winter grit and stones and start leaking. O-rings and seals dry out during months of not running. Compressor clutches wear. Cabin blend doors fail so cold air is made but not delivered. Each has a different fix and a very different cost, which is why diagnosis comes first.
Refrigerant types
Older vehicles use R-134a; most vehicles from the late 2010s onward use R-1234yf, which needs different equipment and costs more per charge. We service both and confirm which your car uses before quoting.
Book before the heat

Why does my AC blow cold on the highway but warm in traffic?
Usually a low charge, a condenser fan that is not running, or a condenser clogged with debris. All reduce cooling at low airflow. A pressure test narrows it down.
Can I run the AC in winter?
Yes, and you should for a few minutes a month. It circulates oil through the seals. Most cars run the compressor automatically in defrost mode anyway.
Is a recharge enough?
Only if the leak is found and fixed. A recharge alone on a leaking system is a short-term fix you will pay for twice.
