Block Heater Check, Cord Replacement & Installation

A block heater that quietly stopped working, or a cracked cord that is a fire waiting to happen, is a Winnipeg classic. Garage 46 tests the heater, replaces damaged cords and plugs, and installs heaters on vehicles that arrived without one.

Serving North Kildonan, East Kildonan, Transcona, East St. Paul and the rest of Winnipeg.

Testing: does it actually draw current?

Heater elements fail, cords break internally and outlets die. The only way to know is to measure. We check the element’s resistance and the current it draws when plugged in, and we inspect the cord from the plug to where it enters the engine bay. If the heater is fine but your outlet or extension cord is not, we tell you that too.

Cord and plug replacement

Cracked insulation, corroded or loose prongs and scorched plug ends cause arcing, and Winnipeg fire crews deal with block heater cord fires every winter. A damaged cord is replaced with a proper weather-rated cord routed away from belts and exhaust. It is a small job that should not wait.

Installing a block heater

Vehicles sold in warmer markets, many imports and some newer models arrive without a heater. Depending on the engine, the options are a frost plug or coolant-passage block heater, an inline coolant heater, or an oil pan heater, sometimes with a battery blanket. We confirm what fits your engine and quote the installation.

Using it well

Plug in once overnight temperatures drop below about −15°C. The heater needs only two to four hours before you drive, so an outdoor-rated timer saves power. Use an outdoor-rated extension cord in good condition, keep the connection out of the snow, and unplug before driving.

Before you book

Block Heater Check, Cord Replacement & Installation questions.

How do I know if my block heater is working?

A plug-in block heater tester shows whether current is flowing. For a definite answer, a shop measures the element’s resistance and current draw. If the car still starts hard when plugged in, something in the chain has failed.

How long should a block heater be plugged in?

Two to four hours before driving is enough. Longer does not warm the engine further; it just uses electricity.

My car does not have a block heater. Can one be added?

Usually, yes. The type depends on the engine. We confirm what fits and quote the installation.
