Common concerns depend heavily on the generation: early water-cooled 911, Boxster and Cayman engines are known for the intermediate shaft (IMS) bearing question, while some V8 Cayennes are known for coolant pipe failures. We advise based on your exact car rather than internet generalisations.

What is the Porsche IMS bearing issue?
Some early water-cooled 911, Boxster and Cayman engines use an intermediate shaft bearing that can fail, sometimes causing serious engine damage. Whether it applies depends on the exact engine and year. Many owners choose an upgraded bearing, often during clutch replacement.
What should a Porsche pre-purchase inspection include?
Beyond a general inspection, it should cover model-specific concerns, leaks, suspension and brakes, and stored fault codes. On many models engine data can also be reviewed for signs of hard use.
