MPI Winter Tire Program 2026: How the Financing Works and Which Tires Qualify

By the Garage 46 team · · 5 min read

The short answer

MPI’s Winter Tire Program lets eligible Manitobans finance up to $2,000 per vehicle for winter tires and related costs, repaid over one to four years at prime plus 2%. From October 1, 2026, tires must carry the Three Peak Mountain Snowflake symbol and be marketed solely for winter. All-weather tires no longer qualify.

What is the MPI Winter Tire Program?

It is a financing program run by Manitoba Public Insurance to help drivers put dedicated winter tires on their vehicles. Instead of paying for a set up front, you finance the purchase and repay it through automatic monthly withdrawals from your bank account.

At the time of writing, MPI lists financing of up to $2,000 per vehicle at prime plus 2%, over one to four years. The rate follows the prime rate, so confirm the current terms with MPI before you commit.

Which tires qualify from October 1, 2026?

Tires must display the Three Peak Mountain Snowflake (3PMSF) symbol, the mountain with a snowflake inside it on the sidewall. From October 1, 2026, they must also be designed and marketed solely for winter conditions.

That change matters if you were looking at all-weather tires. Tires marketed as all-weather, all-season, four-season or year-round are no longer eligible, even when they carry the 3PMSF symbol.

What can the loan cover?

  • Approved winter tires and rims.
  • Mounting, balancing and alignment.
  • Tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS) sensors.
  • Studding, within MPI’s limits.
  • Storage or seasonal switchover, but only if included in the initial purchase.
  • Nitrogen fill, valve stems, shop supplies, taxes and fees.

Tire repairs, and storage or switchovers added later, are not covered.

Who is eligible?

  • Individual MPI customers. Corporate customers are not eligible.
  • Owners of a passenger vehicle or light truck registered in their name.
  • Customers with no outstanding MPI payments or restrictions.

How do you apply?

  1. Choose your tires at a participating retailer and confirm they qualify.
  2. Bring your driver’s licence and vehicle registration.
  3. The retailer confirms eligibility and sets up the loan.

MPI recommends installing winter tires once temperatures stay below 7°C. In Manitoba that usually means October, so start the process before the first snowfall fills every shop’s calendar.
