When Should You Put Winter Tires On in Manitoba?

By the Garage 46 team · · 4 min read

The short answer

Switch to winter tires once daytime temperatures sit consistently around 7°C or below, which in Manitoba is usually October. Below that, all-season rubber stiffens and loses grip, while winter compounds stay flexible. Book your changeover early: the first snowfall sends every driver to the shop in the same week.

What temperature should you switch to winter tires?

The common Canadian guideline is 7°C. Once daytime highs settle at or below that, the rubber compound in all-season and summer tires hardens and grips noticeably less, even on dry pavement. Winter tires use a softer compound and deeper, siped tread designed to stay pliable in the cold and clear slush and snow.

In Manitoba that point usually arrives in October. You do not need to wait for snow. Cold, dry roads are already a reason to make the switch.

Are all-season tires good enough for a Winnipeg winter?

"All-season" really means three seasons in a prairie climate. They are a compromise built for mild winters. For extended cold, packed snow and ice, look for the mountain-and-snowflake symbol on the sidewall, which marks tires that meet a winter traction standard.

Manitoba Public Insurance finances winter tires through its Winter Tire Program. From October 1, 2026, only tires designed and marketed solely for winter, with the mountain-and-snowflake symbol, qualify. All-weather tires are excluded. Check MPI directly for current eligibility before you buy.

How to make your changeover quicker and cheaper

  1. Book before the first forecast snowfall. Shop calendars fill within days once it arrives.
  2. Tell the shop whether your winter tires are already mounted on their own wheels. Swapping complete wheels is a faster job than dismounting and remounting tires.
  3. Check tread depth before the season. Worn winter tires lose much of their advantage.
  4. Mention any vibration, pressure warnings or uneven wear so it can be checked during the swap.
  5. Have locking wheel-nut keys in the car.

When should you switch back to summer tires?

Use the same 7°C rule in reverse. Running winter tires through a warm spring and summer wears the soft compound quickly and lengthens braking distances on hot pavement. Most Manitoba drivers swap back in April or May.
