The short answer
There is no set fee for a Manitoba safety inspection. MPI approves the inspection stations but each one sets its own price, so call and ask. The inspection follows MPI’s standard for brakes, steering, suspension, tires, lights, body and frame rust, and glass. A pre-purchase inspection is a separate, broader check written for a buyer rather than for registration.
Why the price varies
Manitoba Public Insurance approves and audits the stations that can issue a Certificate of Inspection, but it does not set what they charge. Each station prices the inspection time itself. That is why asking “how much is a safety in Winnipeg” gets different answers from different shops. When you phone, ask whether the price includes a re-inspection if the vehicle fails and is repaired.
What the inspection covers
The inspection follows MPI’s published standard. In broad terms it checks:
- Brakes: pad and rotor thickness, lines and hoses, parking brake, pedal.
- Steering and suspension: play in joints and tie rods, worn bushings, shocks and springs.
- Tires and wheels: tread depth, damage, matching sizes.
- Lights, horn, wipers, washers, mirrors and glass, including windshield cracks in the driver’s view.
- Body and frame: structural rust, including rocker panels, floors and frame rails, and brake and fuel lines.
- Exhaust leaks, fuel system, seat belts, airbag warning lights.
It is a minimum standard on the day of inspection. It does not grade the engine, transmission, upcoming maintenance or how the car drives.
Why Manitoba cars fail
From what shops report, the usual failures here are rusted brake lines, rust-perforated rockers and floors, worn tie rod ends and ball joints from potholes, cracked windshields, and tires below the minimum tread. A quick look underneath before you pay for the inspection can save you a second fee.
Safety inspection vs pre-purchase inspection
A safety answers one question: does this vehicle meet the provincial minimum today? A pre-purchase inspection answers a different one: should you buy this car, and what will it cost you over the next year? It covers the engine, transmission, cooling, electronics, stored fault codes and a road test, and it is written for you rather than for the registry. Many buyers get both, in that order.
Garage 46 performs pre-purchase inspections. Call us about safety inspections; approved stations change, and we will tell you straight whether we can issue a COI or point you to a station that can.
