Why Won’t My Car Start in the Cold? Battery, Block Heater and Starter Checks

By the Garage 46 team · · 4 min read

The short answer

On a cold morning, the usual culprit is the battery: cold cuts the power it can deliver while making the engine harder to turn. Other causes include a block heater that isn’t working, thick oil, a weak starter or a fuel or ignition fault. A battery and charging-system test is the fastest place to start.

Why cold weather is hard on starting

Cold slows the chemical reaction inside a battery, so it delivers less current exactly when the engine needs more. Engine oil also thickens in the cold, which makes the engine harder to crank. A battery that copes fine in September can give up on the first deep-freeze morning.

What the sounds tell you

  • Slow, laboured cranking: often a weak battery, a poor connection or very cold, thick oil.
  • Rapid clicking: usually not enough battery power to turn the starter.
  • A single click or nothing: possibly the starter, a connection or a security or ignition issue.
  • Normal cranking but no start: points towards fuel, ignition or sensor problems rather than the battery.

Is your block heater actually working?

A block heater warms the engine coolant so the engine turns over more easily and warms up faster. Cords get pinched, frozen and chewed, and heater elements fail. If your car starts no better after being plugged in, have the cord, the outlet and the heater itself checked.

What to do before the deep freeze

  1. Have the battery and charging system tested in the fall, especially if the battery is a few years old.
  2. Check the block heater cord for damage and make sure the heater works.
  3. Use the oil viscosity your manufacturer specifies for cold weather.
  4. Keep the battery terminals clean and tight.
  5. Mention any slow starts or warning lights when you book, so they can be investigated.
